Newcastle Airport by Metro: The Complete Guide

Newcastle Airport’s quiet superpower is the Tyne and Wear Metro: the green line terminates at a station adjoining the terminal, which means the airport is wired into the same network as Central Station, the coast and Sunderland. This guide covers the times, the fares and the stations that matter to a traveller.

The station and the line

The Airport station is a short covered walk from the terminal, no bus and no road to cross. Green line trains run roughly every 12 minutes through the day, calling at Callerton Parkway, Kingston Park and the city stations: Haymarket, Monument and Central Station in about 25 minutes, continuing under the Tyne towards Sunderland. For mainline rail connections, change at Central Station.

First and last trains

First departures run from around 5:44 am (Sundays from around 6:27 am) and the last trains leave around midnight. The morning edge matters at an airport: for the first wave of departures, the Metro’s first arrival is too late, which is the standing argument for the walk-to hotels.

Fares and tickets

Pay contactless at the gates, buy paper tickets from the machines, or use the local Pop card. Airport trips price like ordinary zone journeys, a fraction of an airport-express fare elsewhere, and day tickets cover onward travel around Tyneside.

The stations hotels care about

Airport: the DoubleTree, Premier Inn and Britannia are all a walk from this end of the line. Callerton Parkway, one stop south, stands 200 metres from the Premier Inn South. Kingston Park is about a ten-minute walk from the Novotel. One line, five hotels.

Frequently Asked Questions

How early does the Metro reach Newcastle Airport?

First trains run from around 5:44 am on weekdays and Saturdays, later on Sundays, reaching the airport shortly after six from the city. For check-ins before roughly 6:15 am, the Metro arrives too late; stay at a walk-to hotel or book a taxi.

Do I need a special ticket for the airport station?

No, the Airport is a regular Metro station: pay contactless at the gates, buy a ticket from the machines, or use a Pop card. Airport journeys price like any other zone-crossing trip, with day tickets available.
