Newcastle Airport to the City Centre

Newcastle Airport is only 7 miles from the city, and it comes with something most UK regional airports lack: its own Metro station adjoining the terminal. The ride into town is cheap, frequent and immune to traffic.

Metro: the default

The Tyne and Wear Metro green line starts at the Airport station, a short covered walk from arrivals. Trains run roughly every 12 minutes, reaching Haymarket, Monument and Central Station in about 25 minutes. Pay contactless at the gates, buy a paper ticket from the machines, or use a Pop card; single fares are modest and day tickets cover onward hops. The full detail, first and last trains included, is in the Metro guide.

Taxi and ride-hailing

A taxi covers the 7 miles to the centre in around 20 minutes outside rush hour. Ranks wait outside arrivals, and ride-hailing apps pick up from the designated zones. For one passenger the Metro usually wins on price; for a family with luggage the taxi reaches rough parity.

Driving

The airport joins the A696 at its doorstep, feeding the A1 for Gateshead, Durham and the north. City-centre parking is the expensive part; if your trip mixes airport and city, consider a park-sleep-fly arrangement at the airport end instead.

At night

The Metro pauses overnight, so a late landing or pre-dawn start means a car, or better, no journey at all: the DoubleTree, Premier Inn and Britannia are all within a walk of the doors.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the fastest way from Newcastle Airport to the city centre?

For most arrivals, the Metro: the Airport station adjoins the terminal and trains reach Central Station in about 25 minutes, running roughly every 12 minutes. A taxi covers the 7 miles in around 20 minutes and wins only when several people share it.

Does the Metro run all night?

No. First trains leave the airport around 5:44 am (later on Sundays) and the last around midnight. Between midnight and dawn, a taxi or ride-hailing car is the realistic option, or a bed at one of the walk-to hotels.
